Take a Grand Strand Beach Break

Officially becoming a federal holiday over 125 years ago in 1894, Labor Day was created to honor the American worker’s many vital contributions to our nation’s successes. And each year as the first Monday in September draws near, we’re all ready to mark the occasion — and take a well-deserved break from the job — with some good times, relaxation and celebration, all best when shared with friends and family.

Of course, the beach is an ideal spot for such festive times — and with its long list of affordable accommodation options and family-friendly attractions, Myrtle Beach ranks among the top beach towns anywhere. If you’re looking to get away to celebrate your long Labor Day weekend in style, consider these fun reasons to set your sights on the Grand Strand:

Little boy and girl standing in the ocean

Beach time: There’s a long list of family-friendly activities to enjoy in the Myrtle Beach area, but the region’s biggest draw (both literally and figuratively) is clearly the Atlantic Ocean. And with 60-plus miles of Atlantic coastline, the Grand Strand offers plenty of stretches of soft oceanfront sands where beach-goers can spread out a beach blanket, prop up a beach umbrella, slather on some sunscreen and enjoy some sun-soaked fun in the sand and surf.

Poolside relaxation: For guests at The Strand Resort on the Myrtle Beach oceanfront, the opportunities to splash around are plentiful — because in addition to its backyard beach, our resort boasts multiple relaxing waterside attractions such as an oceanfront pool deck, a spacious tanning lawn and an oceanfront fire pit. And at each of these, there are plenty of chairs and loungers available, all perfect for kicking back and taking a load off. Perhaps even better, those who are so inclined can swing by The Strand Bar to grab a refreshing cocktail to sip on while they relax waterside.

Hot Summer Nights: Held downtown at Plyler Park and along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, this running event — staged on Monday through Saturday nights from mid-June through early September — offers an array of family-friendly activities and live entertainment in an area that’s already flush with fun things to do. And for guests at The Strand Resort, getting to the center of the action is as easy as driving about a mile south on North Ocean Boulevard (or taking a leisurely stroll along the beach to get there). Fireworks: Labor Day weekend is always a blast, and getting to spend the holiday at the beach is certainly cause for some added (and explosive) activity in the nighttime skies. On the Grand Strand, a fireworks show is scheduled for the evening of Sunday, September 6, 2020, at the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. The event was postponed from the 4th of July, so there should be plenty of added anticipation and extra cause for celebration when this one lights up the night skies over the attraction’s natural saltwater estuary — so be sure to get there early to claim a good spot on the boardwalk for viewing.

Fishing forays: With all of this water around, there aren’t many locales in the entire nation that can top the Grand Strand when it comes to fishing opportunities. Guests at The Strand Resort don’t have to travel far (about 1 miles south) to get to Pier 14, a prime local spot for dropping a line. And of course the Atlantic Ocean is right in the resort’s backyard for those who enjoy surf fishing. (Please note that surf fishing requires a license, it may be restricted or prohibited during certain peak periods, and anglers should always use caution when swimmers or surfers are in the waters.) Further, there’s a long list of area vendors that offer chartered fishing trips, including deep-sea fishing outings and other escorted fishing trips.
