5 tips to start your new year off right at the beach

Travel looks a little different this New Year’s.

Hopper, a travel booking app, reported that more than half of travelers they surveyed said their end-of-year getaway will be their first since the COVID-19 outbreak began. If you’re in that demographic, a vacation is a long time coming.

And while few things feel normal about this travel period, there are things we can do when traveling – especially to favorite destinations such as Myrtle Beach – to bring a blend of normalcy and adventure to the occasion.

We’ve made a few suggestions of ways to start your new year off right on the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach offers lots of hands-on fun at different times, but right now, there are plenty of things to see and do that can be safe and beautiful all at once.

Why should I take a New Year’s vacation in Myrtle Beach?

Many holidays are popular for travel. Despite the pandemic, there are lots of ways to find unique ways to bid 2020 farewell. Although attractions close for the seasons in some markets, the best of Myrtle Beach draws stay open for business. The Grand Strand remains an entertaining, lively spot to ring in the new year.

5 tips for ringing in 2021 right in Myrtle Beach

1. Go to Broadway at the Beach

For a neat spot for shopping and entertainment, it’s Broadway at the Beach. You’ll find friendly store associates and wonderful views as you get your steps in.

It’ll become a regular stop on your Grand Strand visits. The whole family will love it. Hard Rock Cafe and Margaritaville each have special New Year’s events and the Christmas light show will end on Dec. 30. See the Broadway at the Beach calendar of events for details.

You’ll find a happy atmosphere and nice places to eat, too.

2. Try a new restaurant

Speaking of eating … give these a shot while you’re in Myrtle Beach for the New Year.

ASPEN GRILLE:

An incredible experience, with excellent service from hostess to head chef. We recommend the scallops with mushroom risotto and a fried green tomatoes appetizer.

VILLA ROMANA ITALIAN RESTAURANT

Incredible food, including veal in vodka sauce. The spaghetti and meatballs is a work of art! Might become your favorite Italian restaurant in town.

HOOK & BARREL:

Drop by for dinner or happy hour. Get a plate of oysters on the half shell, and cocktail shrimp, with your favorite beverage. The filet with lobster tail is unforgettable.

3. Ride SkyWheel Myrtle Beach

SkyWheel Myrtle Beach is a 187-foot observation wheel, opened in 2011. It’s one of the tallest Ferris wheels in North America.

It’s a fun experience with spectacular views of the Grand Strand. Lines will be shorter in the offseason, and you’ll probably get more time than you would on a July ride. It’s steps away from several Myrtle Beach resorts, right down on the boardwalk. You’ll love this attraction!

It’s a smooth ride and a cool place to spend some time in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

4. Walk along the Boardwalk

It’s an iconic spot to visit on the Grand Strand! Here’s what to do there.

PLAY at Fun Plaza: You’ll love this arcade, a 4-minute walk from SkyWheel. Tons of gaming variety and excellent prices. You’ll be back the next time you visit the Grand Strand!

EAT at The Bowery: This historic venue has a southern vibe and great entertainment. The servers are friendly and the burgers are amazing. At least drop by for a drink.

SHOP at I Love Sugar: So. Much. Candy. You can’t have it all, but you should definitely buy SOME. There’s every kind of candy imaginable. Your kids will love it, obviously.

5. Walk along the Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk

The most chill place in the Grand Strand. Relax on the Intracoastal Waterway. Try these:

The Wicked Tuna: Handmade cocktails make for a wonderful happy hour experience. Try the sushi and the best crab cakes around. Grouper or ribeye? You might have to try them both.

Bovine’s: Start off with spinach and artichoke dip with warm tortillas, and follow it up with a tasty burger. Or try the catch of the day and seafood platter. Awesome view, too!

Wahoo’s Fish House: Wonderful ambiance and perfectly executed dishes. Best place for the fresh catch! Seared scallops here are delicious. It’s a hit for any evening of the week.
